The Research Institute of Wildlife and Ecology (FIWI) developed in cooperation with Vectronic Aerospace  a special data logging system for long term measurements of ruminal heart rate and body temperature of free living ruminants.

The Ruminal Heart Rate/Temperature Data Logging System is an independent device with its own battery. However, it can be combinded with Vectronic VERTEX GPS collar including a battery 1D-5D and/or a Vectronic Drop Off System.

Operation overview

The main system components of the Ruminal Heart Rate/Temperature Data Logging System are the Ruminal Implant Transmitter (RIT) and the Collar Data Logger. The RIT is placed in the rumen of the animal. The Collar Data Logger is integrated in the battery pack, which is deployed to the belt around the animals’ neck.

The RIT records raw heart rate based on heartbeat vibration during low activity periods of the animal and rumen temperature. The heart rate and temperature data are transmitted to the Collar Data Logger in predefined intervals, using a short-range UHF radio data link.

In addition to these internal parameters measured by the implant, animal activity and collar temperature is measured and stored by the Collar Data Logger with the same measurement interval as the implant.

All collected data are stored in the nonvolatile logger memory on board.

The download of the stored data sets is possible via direct USB cable connection to the computer or with an additionally available RumiLog Base Station via a UHF data link to the Collar Data Logger.

For the interpretation of the downloaded data files in particular the heart rate values, a special designed filter program free accessible via internet must be used.

  • body temperature: measurement interval 180s, resolution 0.0625°C, accuracy 0.1°C
  • raw heartbeat vibration: scan time 180s, scan interval 6,9 or 12 minutes, detection range 15 … 150 beats/minute

Post Processed Data

  • for data processing an upload of recorded raw data to is necessary
  • result: ruminal heart rate, temperature and processed activity data (csv formatted)

System components

Ruminal Implant Transmitter (RIT)

The RIT is a stainless steel/ceramic tube containing a highly sensitive acceleration sensor to detect the heartbeat vibrations and a digital temperature sensor to measure body temperature.
The temperature measurement interval and the heart rate scan time are set to 180 s to get enough heart rate raw data for the filter program to generate one reliable heart rate value per interval. To extend the lifetime of the implant, the heart rate scan can be programmed to every 2nd, 3rd or 4th measurement interval. This setting cannot be changed after shipping.
To place the implant in rumen of the animal, a bolus applicator must be used (not included). Once swallowed, the implant can only be removed by hunting the animal.

Collar Data Logger
The Collar Data Logger is designed to work independent with its own battery and is integrated in the collars battery pack by replacing one of the D cell batteries. The logger electronic is able to synchronize automatically with its corresponding RIT to get the same time scale for the internal and external measurements. Received data packets from the implant and additional measurements from the logger electronic are stored together in the onboard nonvolatile memory.

The logger can be connected via USB connection cable to the windows program RumiLog to change settings or retrieve data. Alternatively, the download of stored data via a UHF data link is possible by using RumiLog Base Station. The communication range to retrieve the data for example near feeding places is limited to 200 m.

RumiLog Base Station

To switch the RIT On/Off, checking the function of an implant and download the status and data stored in the collar data logger, a base station with USB connection to the RumiLog program can be used. The base station is USB powered, the communication range to a collar can be up to 200 m if a UHF YAGI antenna (optional) is used. The standard whip antenna is used for short range communication. This device is available optionally.

LED Check Operation Device

To check the status of the Collar Data Logger, a status indicator unit can be plugged into the communication connector of the logger. A red light on the connector indicates if the logger is OFF (no light), ON and waiting for synchronization with the implant (the LED will blink every 2 seconds) and ON with successfully synchronization to the implant (1 second blink interval).

ON/OFF Switch Magnet

To switch an implant or logger on/off, a magnet can be used by holding the magnet to the respective marking for 3 seconds (tolerance is 2 – 4 seconds)

Graphical User Interface/GUI – RumiLog

This PC application software is required for direct connection with Collar Data Logger or RumiLog Base Station. It is used for data download and change of settings. (included in Logging System)

Ruminal Heart Rate Data Filter Service

The raw heartrate data have to be uploaded to for filtering.

The result are post processed data of ruminal heart rate. The downloaded data are csv formatted.
